During an intake interview, the psychological suffering is mapped out and an analysis of the request for help is made. Treatment can consist of talks, creative techniques, a body-oriented approach and visualizations. The treatment style varies according to the therapist's frame of reference. The aim of the treatment is to express the psychological suffering, to process it and to look for solutions.
Couple therapy
In couple therapy, both partners discuss with the therapist questions concerning connection, trust, sexuality, tension and/or dissatisfaction in the relationship. The different perceptions of both partners are explored in an open and respectful way.
Family therapy
Families exist in different shapes and colours: two-parent families, single-parent families, families with adopted or foster children, divorced families and families with same-sex parents. Sometimes a family goes through a difficult period or one of the family members is struggling.
In a family counselling session, the whole family is invited to speak, listen and look for solutions together. Every member of the family is welcome to ask questions and share experiences. In this way, topics become open for discussion and mutual understanding and connection grow.
Trauma (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
is a technique for treating permanent stress after traumatic and unprocessed experiences. EMDR stimulates the natural processing. EMDR can lead to a discharge of emotions and physical complaints. Because of the intensity of this form of processing, care is taken to build a relationship of trust with the therapist and to teach stabilisation techniques.
Psychiatric follow-up
The starting point of psychiatric follow-up is the unity of physical, mental and emotional processes (holism). During a consultation, advice on medication is given and, in consultation, the best treatment is considered. Psychiatric follow-up can also mean that no medication is prescribed.
Because of the more limited frequency of psychiatric follow-up, it is usually recommended to follow additional counselling with a psychotherapist.
Dr Veerle Jans is currently unable to take on any new patients. Please contact the departement consultation adult psychiatry at your local hospital.
The overview of the adult team provides information for each therapist about the therapeutic approach, target group, range, themes and languages spoken. For each therapist, you will also find details of working methods, education, experience, memberships of professional associations, contact details, availability and location
(Madou) and
(Agora).
